Help Center · Building an IEP

The core workflow.

Once you've got a student open, every goal follows the same shape: browse → customize → add → repeat. This page goes through each of those pieces plus the small tools around them — search, start-over, the measurement cadence.

Subject pills

At the top of the goals area are four pills — one per subject. The number on each pill is how many goals live in that subject.

Click a pill to show the goals in that subject. The selected pill fills with its subject's color (Reading coral, Writing gold, Math forest, Behavior ink); the rest stay cream.

Goal cards

Each goal is a card with four pieces:

  • Header tags — subject, sub-skill (e.g. "Decoding"), and grade band.
  • Goal title — short name for the skill.
  • Goal sentence — the measurable goal, with editable phrases shown as coral-pink pills. The student's name (from the header at the top of the page) is substituted automatically.
  • Add / Remove button and the source citation (hover the citation to see the full reference).

Editing a chip

Click any coral-pink phrase to open its dropdown. You'll see:

  • A short list of the most common options for that phrase.
  • A Or type your own… field at the bottom — type anything and press Enter. Your text replaces the chip.

Click anywhere outside the dropdown, or press Esc, to close it.

Add to IEP — the basket on the right

+ Add to IEP saves the current version of the goal (including whatever pill values you changed) into the green panel on the right. The button then flips to Remove from IEP for that goal.

The panel title shows "IEP for [Student]" along with a count of how many goals are in it. The goals are listed in the order you added them.

Jumping back to edit an added goal

Click a goal inside the IEP panel. The page switches to that goal's subject if needed, scrolls the goal card into view, and surrounds it with a coral ring so you can see which one you're editing. The basket item also gets a gold left-edge accent to show it's the one currently in focus.

Any chip changes you make while a goal is already in the basket are saved immediately — you don't need to re-add it.

Search across all subjects

Above the subject pills is a search bar. Type any word — a skill ("fluency"), a material ("coins"), a measurement method ("probe") — and the page hides everything that doesn't match, showing only the goals that do, regardless of subject.

Clear the search (Clear search link, or just empty the box) to get back to the normal single-subject view.

Start over

Below Copy all goals as text, the Clear this IEP & start over link empties the basket and resets every chip on every goal back to its original value. It asks for confirmation first, and it doesn't touch any other students — only the one you have open.

The year selector

Every IEP is tied to a school year. Right now there's a single option — 2025–2026 — so the year dropdown is shown but disabled. Multi-year support (so you can roll a student's goals over year-to-year and just update baselines) is coming.

About the goal library

The goals that ship with the Goal Bank are drawn from confirmed public-domain sources — the National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII), the Institute of Education Sciences' What Works Clearinghouse practice guides, and federal IDEA regulations. Each card links to its specific source citation (hover the source name at the bottom of the card).

You can always override any phrase with your own text — the library is a starting point, not a constraint.
