My students disappeared!
If you were using Browser Storage (the default), students can disappear for a few reasons:
- You cleared your browser's history or site data.
- You're on a different browser, a different profile, or a different computer than before.
- You're in private / incognito mode, which doesn't keep Browser Storage across sessions.
- Your school reset the device (common at the end of a semester on Chromebooks).
If you had downloaded a Backup File (or Desktop Storage pointing at a file in OneDrive/Google Drive), click Import backup file on the Goal Bank home page and pick that file. Your students come back exactly as they were.
See Saving your work for how to prevent this next time.
I clicked "Import backup file" and nothing happened.
If you don't see the file picker open:
- Check whether a privacy or ad-blocker extension (like Brave Shields, uBlock, DuckDuckGo, Privacy Badger) is blocking file dialogs. Try pausing it on this site.
- Try in a different browser (Chrome or Edge are the most tested).
- Refresh the page and try once more — sometimes the script hasn't finished loading.
"Move to Desktop Storage" isn't showing up.
Desktop Storage only works in browsers that support it — Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, and most other Chromium-based browsers. It does not work in Safari, Firefox, or on iPads. If you're on one of those, you'll see just "Browser Storage" with no upgrade option. Use Download backup (all students) at the end of each session as your durable save.
Desktop Storage says "needs reconnecting."
Most browsers require you to re-approve file access after a full browser restart. Click Reconnect to file. The browser may ask you to confirm access to the same file you picked before — choose "Allow" or "Save" and you're back.
A goal shows a warning after I imported a backup.
This means we've updated that goal in our library since you exported the file. Your customizations are still there — we just want you to take a quick look to make sure everything still reads the way you intended before you copy or export again.
A pill dropdown opens behind another goal card.
This should be fixed — if you see it, please report it. Include your browser name and version. In the meantime, scrolling the page slightly usually lets you click the option you want.
Chromebook students / school-issued devices
On school Chromebooks, we strongly recommend setting up Desktop Storage pointed at your Google Drive folder. Chromebook profiles can reset without warning during district-wide updates, and Browser Storage alone may not survive. Desktop Storage in a Drive folder keeps your work safe and follows you across any Chromebook you sign into.
Still stuck?
Please get in touch. We're a small team and we read every message.
Include: what you were trying to do, what you clicked, what you expected, what happened instead, and your browser name and version if you know it. Screenshots help too.
